I’m almost here!

I’m getting excited now (sorry Mom and Dad for making you nervous)! Do you think I will be born on Wednesday or will it take me all day and I won’t arrive until Thursday???

Hang in there Mom and Dad! All of this will be over soon!

35 weeks now! I am coming soon…

It has been a while since my last blog. In last two months, my main activities are growing and moving around.  Doctor said that i had a growth spur. Mom is freaked out because her belly becomes so BIG now! She is not happy the fact that she is chubby, heavy and swollen. She describes herself having elephant feet, bear palm, panda face and belly.  😦

I know her pain and I can not wait to come to see her and dad as well!  Five more  (perhaps less) weeks to go!

Even though complaining a lot, mom is happily to just get her final maternity photos done before I come. Love those photos.

Where “Wan Li 万里” comes from

Daddy & Mommy at the Great Wall

Now we know where Miles comes from, so how did your daddy and mommy get your Chinese name of Wan Li 万里?

Having a Chinese mommy means you will have a Chinese name, and perhaps struggle to learn some Chinese in the future. OK, that is too early to scare you with this idea. Choosing your Chinese name is actually much easier than choosing your English name. Once we felt connected with the name Miles, the Chinese name came through easily and naturally. The literary meaning of Miles in Chinese is pronounced as Li 里. Wan 万 is a little bit homophonic to Winston, and also means 10 thousand in Chinese. With your daddy’s last name Long, meaning Dragon, the totem of China, we didn’t even spend time in discussing and debating what Chinese name you should have.

The famous Great Wall of China is called Wan Li Chang Cheng (10 Thousand Miles of Long Wall), do you see the connection? It stands for strength and majesty. In Chinese culture, people often describe the Great Wall as a dragon, as long as 10 thousand miles from the west to the east till the ocean. Can you imagine the picture of it now? The Great Wall is the symbol of China and one of your daddy and mommy’s favorite travel destinations. We believe you will be there some day!

There is also a famous former premier in China called Wan Li. Well, your mommy is not a fan of him, but he has a good name.

Where “Miles” Comes From

Miles Teg - Heretics of Dune

Miles Teg - Heretics of Dune

If you couldn’t tell already, your parents Betty and Zac are pretty big nerds. Who else starts a blog, Facebook page, and Twitter account for their baby? When trying to decide on a name, we thought long and hard before making a decision. We searched the internet for baby naming sites, made lists, and referenced any sources we could think of. So, where does your name, Miles, come from really?

One of your Dad’s favorite books is the Dune series by Frank Herbert. When looking at the main characters of the first trilogy, everything is pretty “normal” with names like Paul and Duncan. A favorite character from the 5th and 6th books, Miles Teg, really stuck out and we thought hard about this name and debating this with Duncan. We liked the name Duncan from both the character of Duncan Idaho from the Dune book series and Duncan MacLeod from the movie franchise and TV series: Highlander. You were almost Duncan! However, we liked Miles more and thought it a more fitting name.

Miles Teg was the Supreme Bashar of the Bene Gesserit, fitting for the Latin meaning of Miles of “soldier.” Miles Teg is described as “a military genius, having a strong sense of loyalty (wiki).” Teg becomes a main character of the final two Dune novels, both a Mentat (or human computer) and a Bene Gessert fighter.

I will let your Mom tell you a bit about your Chinese name in another post, which also was a strong influence on why we chose the name “Miles.” Long Wan Li, you will do great things!

I’m growing…

I am 23 week old now. Mommy reads “what to expect” every day and claims that I am at the size of papaya now. She complaints that she can not sleep on her back and feel heavy. Today, she just claimed that it seems I grew overnight because she felt so uncomfortable with the same pants she wore yesterday! I doubt about that and believe it is because of those Korean BBQ she ate for her big lunch yesterday. But, I am going to double my size in the rest of time before March!

My nerdy daddy and mommy setup my Facebook account yesterday. They can not help to make me a social media baby.  So, I start making friends already before born!  Dad listed my activities as “sleeping, kicking and drinking”… urg…what else can I do? I start kicking a lot now. I need more space to stretch for growing.

I am not even that big yet, but mom  has her mid-term maternity photo taken today . It is so nice to have parents as photographers that you can take nice arty photos any time! 🙂

I am a BOY!

Mommy and daddy had been waiting for this moment for so long! Of course, they were asked millions times: do you know if it’s a boy or girl yet? Who would be more anxious than them to know what I would be. Mommy was hoping for a boy, but she felt I would be a girl. She said: I don’t feel too much baby movement yet, so it must be a quiet girl.  She said she preferred a boy as the first child because it seemed to be easier, although she likes girl too. Daddy preferred a girl, but I think he just wanted to make mommy feel better in case I am a girl.  Any way, at the moment they knew I’m a boy, they announced it in Facebook, twitter, text message; the message is flying around with tons of congratulations from friends… I told you, they are nerdy… (I am just wondering, would they say “congratulations” if I were a girl? )

My feet are so cute in the ultrasound! It was supposed to be the last ultrasound.  I planned to be naughty a little bit and played “hide and seek” game with the nurse so she couldn’t see something on my heart. Mommy needs to go back for another ultrasound in two weeks so I can see her again before March! It is really a long time to see her in March! I believe she will be happy to see my cute little feet and arms again in two weeks. 🙂
